Ephesians Chapter 6

Paul in his last chapter begins with an exhortation and charging different parties with different responsibility- what they should do, why do it and the end result or benefit of doing it.

a) To children– Should obey their parents in the Lord (1st Commandment with a promise).
Why?– Because they belong to the Lord and it is the right thing to do.
Result– That it may go well with them and enjoy long life on earth.

b) To fathers– Should not provoke their children to anger by the way they treat them. Rather they should bring them up in training and instruction of the Lord.

c) Slaves– Should obey their earthly masters with deep respect and fear
Why– As they do this with sincerity in serving the Lord, they should not only do this to get favor from their masters but like slaves of Christ, do the will of God from their hearts, serving the Lord wholeheartedly not men.
Result– The Lord rewards each one of us for whatever good we do, whether a slave or free.

d) Masters– should not threaten their slaves
Why– because they have a master in heaven and shows no favoritism.

Finally Paul Exhorts the church to be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power through putting on the full armor of Christ in order to be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.

In Ephesians 6:12, the battle is described as a ‘struggle’– it’s like wrestling, a hand-to-hand fight. The devil , the ruler of the dark world, will always try to reclaim us to get us back to the old way of living.

But the encouragement we need to stick to is that the battle against Satan was won by Jesus Christ at Calvary- ( 1 John 3:8 b, Col 2:15), Satan was crashed, he is a defeated enemy.

We believers, are not under Satan’s authority unless we choose to give him a place in our lives. Someone said, ‘Satan has no power unless given to him by those who choose to worship him.’

Christian also have to understand that they are opposed by Satan and his demons in many different ways which include, negative thoughts and discouragements, temptations, health problems, family and emotional problems, the enemy within ourselves- the flesh, the corrupt values of this present world system which encourages pride, selfishness , greed and lust.

If we attempt to defeat Satan in our own strength, we will fail. But if we stand firm, put on the armor of God and seek the help of the Holy Spirit, then we stand at winning position against the devil.

In effecting this, Paul gives the components of the weapons of warfare that a believer should have in place at all times, never putting the weapons down for we are in a constant war against the devil, the battlefield against the devil became active when we received Christ in our lives and it will continue being active until we depart from this world.

This are the armors he lists which we will discuss in detail one after the other;

a) The belt of truth
b) The breastplate of righteousness
c) Our feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
d) The shield of faith- with which we can be able to extinguish the flaming arrows of the devil.
e) The helmet of salvation
f) The sword of the spirit as the word of God
g) Praying at all occasions.
